EUROPEAN RESEARCHES MEET AT ZARAGOZA TO LAUNCH DECUB PROJECT

24-02-2025

On 17 and 18 February, members of the European DECUB project met in the San Valero Group Building and on the Villanueva de Gállego campus to promote the launch of the European project Decarbonizing Urban Blocks: An integrated approach for circular urban regeneration, known as DECUB.

This project, made up of 10 partners from 4 European countries (France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain), is led by San Jorge University.

Among the objectives of the project is to test and compare different interventions, from light rehabilitation to deconstruction and reconstruction, based on environmental, technical, social and economic criteria.

To this end, actions will be carried out as:

  • Implementation of three urban laboratories in Heerlen (The Netherlands), Verviers (Belgium) and Zaragoza (Spain), involving local communities and stakeholders in the co-design of regeneration solutions for city blocks.
  • Development of a block archetype classification method based on statistical data analysis techniques.
  • Definition and calculation of indicators related to the environmental and heritage assessment of the built environment, applicable at block level.
  • Development of digital twins of selected blocks, integrating a complete 3D representation of the built environment with its material register, considering both built and unbuilt components.

This project has been funded by Spanish Agencia Estatal de la Investigación (AEI: PCI2024-155064-2), Spanish Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación (CDTI), Fund for Scientific Research in Belgium (FNRS), The French National Research Agency (ANR), and Taskforce for Applied Research in The Netherlands (SIA), under the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership, which has been co-funded by the European Commission.

DECUB is aligned with EU policies like the European Green Deal and the New European Bauhaus.
